Four Pests That Can Be Picked Up From School (And How to Stop Them)

A school is a place where children spend a lot of their waking hours in, cooped up together in a classroom most of the time. Thus, it turns into an ideal place for all kinds of diseases to spread. A number of creepy crawlies could have snuck into your kid’s backpack from school and no one would have even noticed it. After that, it is only a matter of time before a pest infestation happens at your home.

There are mainly four pests you need to watch out for that your kid can pick up from school, and there are several things you can do to prevent it:

  • Ants
  • Ants crawl in from nowhere whenever there’s food around, and can be quite annoying in large numbers by making your food inedible. They can spread into your home through your kid’s lunch or snack box. Ants love sweet stuff and this means that they can also be attracted to half eaten chocolate bars or cookie packets your kids can have in his/her backpack.

    What to do:

The best thing to do is to ask your child to wash his/her lunchbox soon as they are done. As for the unwrapped sweet treats, they should be placed inside a sealable plastic bag or container before keeping it inside the backpack so as to prevent ants from getting into it. This will also help to keep the food fresh and edible.

  • Fruit Flies
  • Fruit flies are so minute that one would not expect them to be bothersome, but they can be in reality. In large numbers, they can be unbearable when they swarm around your food and worse, sit on it. Just like with ants, fruit flies can get attracted to the contents of your child’s lunchbox and simply bring themselves over to your home that way.

    What to do:

Since fruit flies love feasting on ripe fruits more than anything, make sure not to pack fruits in your kid’s lunchbox that can get spoiled or overripe quickly. Cleaning out the lunchbox quickly after eating can also be helpful.

  • Lice
  • Parents dread the back-to-school season for one major reason, which is lice. Several schools follow a no-nit policy which aims to prevent a lice infestation at school. Kids who pick up lice from school have a good chance of spreading it to their family members at home too.

    What to do:

Doing a thorough check of your child’s head for lice at least once a week can be helpful in keeping an infestation at bay. Applying a good lice repellent spray can also help to eliminate the issue.

  • Bed Bugs
  • It is a common misconception that bed bugs are only found on beds, when the truth is that there are several other places where they can be found. For instance, your kid could have picked bed bugs from anywhere in school through their clothes, backpacks, and so on. Bed bugs don’t spread any diseases as such, but can cause irritation through bites and spoil your sleep.

    What to do:

If you suspect that your child could have bought back bed bugs, empty his/her backpack immediately, and clean it thoroughly, preferably with a vacuum cleaner. The clothes your child was wearing should also be washed in hot water as soon as possible.

Pests can be bothersome, but as long as you take the necessary measures to prevent them, you can live a pest free life at home.
